New Belgium Voodoo Ranger IPA Review

Voodoo Ranger has become one of my must-have beers in the fridge. It just hits all the right notes for me. I first came across the Voodoo IPA line on a trip to New Belgium Brewing in Denver a couple of years ago and haven’t looked back.

I’ve been able to pick up a 12-pack as part of a pre-Christmas haul, and it’s becoming more widely available in Nashville and most decent liquor stores or craft beer tap houses should have it stocked.

Voodoo Ranger IPA Alcohol Content and IBU

Beer: Voodoo Ranger
Brewery: New Belgium Brewing
Type of Beer: IPA
ABV: 7%
IBU: 50

The Appearance

The Voodoo Ranger offers a very light amber color with a light lacing from the head. It’s not as thick as I would like it to be, but this is just about the only slight I can place against it.

The aroma is what I would describe as a faint fruity whiff, with hints of malt, and maybe some mango. It’s not overpowering considering the fruitiness that lingers as you drink. I didn’t get the citrusy smell that others have experienced.

The Taste

Poured out of a bottle into a glass, the initial sip is surprisingly crisp and the carbonation not overly powerful on the tongue. Tropical, light citrusy hops balance out the maltiness. The more I drink of it the fruitier it feels.

At 7% it’s not too boozy and feels well balanced.

What to Drink With

Works absolute wonders with bar food – wings, burgers, pizza. Light enough that it doesn’t detract from the food or fill you up, but enough of a drink to be just the right feeling of complimentary.

Round-Up

The Voodoo Ranger IPA from New Belgium Brewing appeals because it makes the complex seem simple. A well balanced IPA that is very drinkable and not overpowering. If you haven’t sampled already this is an IPA you can come back to and know what you’re going to get. Easily shareable amongst even non-IPA drinkers, and readily available at most places you purchase your alcohol.

Drink up!
