Back in early March, Crazy Gnome Brewery was just weeks from opening. Then a tornado blew through and wrecked East Nashville businesses and homes, including Crazy Gnome. The Covid-19 hit and Nashville was under a lockdown. Not to be deterred, Crazy Gnome worked diligently to repair the tornado damage and re-opened in August.
Located on Gallatin Rd next to Gym 5, Crazy Gnome is a cozy place to enjoy a few beers, pick up some beer merch, and grab a few crowlers to go. I ordered online and was able to pick up the 32oz crowlers at the bar without waiting. Here’s what I took home..
Red Hat Ale
Red Hat Ale comes in at around 5% ABV. It had a dark copper body and I found it malty and smooth. There were some smoky notes on the back side, but all being said it was a very drinkable red ale.
Hop Hop Goose IPA
I was excited to try the Hop Hop Goose IPA from Crazy Gnome, and coming it 7% ABV it drank well without being overpowering. There is a soft malt initially, but I found this combined well with the light floral and citrus hints. The scent was almost sweet but didn’t detract from the drink overall. A good, solid west coast style IPA.
Celtic Grounds Irish Stout
I’ve been on a bit of a stout kick recently, so I was eager to taste Celtic Grounds. Infused with coffee from local coffee roaster, Split Bean Roasting Co., this stout tasted like your morning coffee but with all the upside of a beer. Coffee and cocoa were very noteworthy, and combined nicely for a smooth and very drinkable stout.
Having just received a peanut butter cup from Tempered Chocolate, I combined the two, a mouthful of stout followed by a taste of peanut butter cup, for a chocolate on peanut butter, on chocolate taste feast.
Not too heavy, I would recommend this as a great entry beer to stout newbies.
Celtic Grounds was 7.3% ABV.
